Early Fireworks: A review of the 2025 NFL Season's Opening Month

The 2025 NFL season has roared into life with a blend of offensive explosions, defensive masterclasses, and enough heartbreak to fuel a thousand hot takes. As we hit October 1, the league's first four weeks have delivered nail-biters, blowouts, and a few upsets that left fans—and bettors—scratching their heads. For those tuned into the gambling side of the game, it's been a rollercoaster of calculated risks paying off big or burning through units in spectacular fashion. We’ve watched countless videos of tipsters putting up big bets and most unfortunately have been losers.

We’ve started slowly with our NFL betting ledger, we believe it pays to get some form on the board before you really dive in deep on the betting, that’s just the smart way to go. How can you possibly be an expert on the game and put your hard earned dollars out when you haven’t seen how these teams are performing? For us we bet cautiously this early in the season, the amount of Mega Maxes and 10u specials we’ve seen floating around (most of which lost in devastating fashion) is seriously astonishing in the NFL’s first month.

Here’s a look at our high-stakes NFL wager tracker, focusing on our first 15 key plays across Weeks 2 through 4 (we didn't have a bet in week 1, why would you?). We've broken down each matchup, highlighted how the bets fared, provided some strategic insights, tabled our wins, losses, and profitability. By the end, you'll see why this season's early chaos has yielded a steady 50.65% return on investment (ROI) from our tracked portfolio—turning 20 units staked into a tidy 10.13-units of profit.

Whether you're a seasoned sharper or a casual fan dipping toes into props and totals, the 2025 slate has been a goldmine for data-driven decisions. Let's unpack the action week by week, starting out with the grind of Week 2 back on September 15.

Week 2: Defensive Dominance Meets Offensive Surges (September 15)

Week 2 kicked off with a slate heavy on revenge narratives and rookie spotlights, but for bettors, it was all about exploiting team totals, player props, and same-game parlays. Our tracker loaded up here, firing off nine bets across seven games. The results? A mixed bag, but leaning positive with six wins and three losses, netting a solid +3.13 units.

Chicago Bears 21, Detroit Lions 52: Lions' Offense Erupts in NFC North Bloodbath

What was billed as a gritty divisional clash turned into a rout at Ford Field. The Lions, powered by Jared Goff's 312 yards and four touchdowns (two to Amon-Ra St. Brown), torched Chicago's secondary for 52 points—their highest output since 2017. The Bears managed a late garbage-time touchdown but couldn't stem the tide, with Caleb Williams sacked four times and throwing two picks.

Bet Recap: Lions Over 20.5 Total Points w/ Lions -4.5 (1 unit, -116 odds, WIN +0.86 units): Double dip cashed as the Lions covered and then some, outgaining Chicago 481-289.

Cleveland Browns 17, Baltimore Ravens 41: Jackson's Four TDs Bury Cleveland

Lamar Jackson diced up the Browns for 320 passing yards and four TDs, plus 65 rushing. Baltimore's defense added two picks, turning this into a 41-17 laugher at M&T Bank Stadium.

Bet Recap: Ravens -5.5 w/ Over 2.5 TDs, L. Jackson 20+ Rush Yds, D. Henry 60+ Rush Yds (1 unit, -125 odds, LOSS -1 unit): Jackson and the spread hit, but Henry stalled at 55 yards behind a clogged line—close, but no cigar.

Atlanta Falcons 22, Minnesota Vikings 6: Falcons' Ground Game Grinds Out a Defensive Masterpiece

The Falcons traveled to U.S. Bank Stadium riding high off a Week 1 upset, and they turned the purple faithful's homecoming sour with a suffocating 22-6 shutout—well, almost shutout, as Minnesota managed a lone field goal. Atlanta's defense, led by new coordinator Ryan Nielsen, sacked rookie QB J.J. McCarthy five times, holding the Vikings to just 187 total yards. Running back Bijan Robinson feasted on the ground with 112 yards and a touchdown, while Tyler Allgeier sealed it with a 5-yard score late.

Bet Recap: Falcons Over 1.5 Field Goals (1 unit, -116 odds, WIN +0.86 units)

Our prop on Atlanta's kickers cashed easily. Younghoe Koo connected on three field goals (from 28, 42, and 49 yards), capitalizing on Minnesota's red-zone stops. In a game low on points, this was a safe anchor for the parlay-heavy day.

Jacksonville Jaguars 27, Cincinnati Bengals 31: Burrow's Bengals Edge a Shootout

Joe Burrow's return from injury was magical: 340 yards, three TDs, no picks. The Jags kept pace with Trevor Lawrence's 290 yards, but a late Ja'Marr Chase grab sealed Cincinnati's home win.

Bet Recap: J. Burrow Over 1.5 Passing TDs w/ T. Etienne 50+ Rushing Yards (1 unit, +155 odds, LOSS -1 unit): Burrow delivered (three TDs), but Etienne limped to 42 yards on a bruised knee, dooming the leg.

New York Giants 37, Dallas Cowboys 40 (OT): Prescott's Heroics Force Overtime Thriller

Jerry Jones' house rocked in a 40-37 OT classic, where Dak Prescott threw for 385 yards and three scores, including a game-tying drive in the final minute. The Giants, led by Daniel Jones' 280 yards, fought valiantly but fell short on a missed field goal in extra time.

Bet Recap: D. Prescott Over 1.5 Passing TDs (1 unit, -131 odds, WIN +0.76 units): Prescott hit three, including bombs to CeeDee Lamb.

Philadelphia Eagles 20, Kansas City Chiefs 17: Philly's D Steals Super Bowl Rematch

In a nod to last year's heartbreak, the Eagles' front seven sacked Patrick Mahomes four times, limiting KC to 17 points. Jalen Hurts managed 220 yards and a rushing score for the road win at Arrowhead.

Bet Tie-In: The parlay's Eagles/Chiefs legs (over 9.5 points each half, scoring in both halves) faltered as Philly's second-half field goal drought killed it.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers 20, Houston Texans 19: Bucs Survive C.J. Stroud's Rally

Baker Mayfield's two TDs edged out Stroud's 300-yard effort in Houston, with Tampa's defense stuffing a final drive.

Bet Recap: Bucs Over 13.5 Total Points (4 units, -357 odds, WIN +1.12 units): Low line, heavy juice, but Tampa cleared it with room to spare—heavy breathing for a big payout.

Buffalo Bills 30, New York Jets 10: Allen Bloodies But Buries Rival

Despite a bloody nose from a hit, Josh Allen threw three TDs in a rout at MetLife, dropping the Jets to 0-2.

Bet Tie-In: Bills H2H and Allen 1+ TD propped the parlay, but the overall miss elsewhere sank it.

Week 2's betting haul: +3.13 units profit on 12 units risked. Momentum builder.

Week 3: Thursday Night Grit and Friday Surprises (September 19)

A lighter slate for our tracker, but the Thursday tilt was pivotal. One bet, one win.

Miami Dolphins 21, Buffalo Bills 31: Bills' Late Surge Stamps Dolphins

At Highmark Stadium, Tua Tagovailoa flashed 280 yards and two scores, but Josh Allen's third-quarter explosion (two TDs) flipped a 14-14 tie into a 31-21 Bills victory. James Cook rushed for 105 yards to ice it.

Bet Recap: Bills Over 30.5 Total Points (1 unit, -131 odds, WIN +0.76 units): Buffalo torched 31 exactly, cashing the over in a divisional dogfight that showcased Allen's MVP form.

Week 3: +0.76 units. Chip away when you are still reviewing the form!

Week 4: Thursday Drama to Monday Mayhem (September 26-29)

The Guru Sports Tracker is starting to dial in and paid off big in the end with a classic: Five bets across four games, four wins, one loss for +4.24 units. Week 4 ended in a barn burner after we hit the multi in the Packers Cowboys match.

Seattle Seahawks 23, Arizona Cardinals 20: Myers' Walk-Off FG Seals TNF Thriller

State Farm Stadium hosted a desert duel where Geno Smith's 245 yards met Kyler Murray's 220 and a rushing TD. Jason Myers' 52-yarder as time expired lifted Seattle after a Cardinals' onside kick fumble.

Bet Recap: Seahawks Over 1.5 FGs (1 unit, -156 odds, WIN +0.64 units): Myers hit three, including the winner—props to the leg.

Cleveland Browns 10, Detroit Lions 34: Goff, St. Brown Carve Up Cleveland Again

Ford Field redux: Goff-to-St. Brown connected twice for TDs in a 34-10 demolition. Deshaun Watson's 180 yards couldn't match Detroit's 420 total offense.

Bet Recap: Lions Over 27.5 Total Points (1 unit, -131 odds, WIN +0.76 units): Detroit's 34 crushed it, extending their win streak.

Los Angeles Chargers 18, New York Giants 21: Dart's Debut Upset Stuns LA

Rookie QB Jaxson Dart threw a TD pass and ran for another in his first start, leading the Giants to a 21-18 shocker at MetLife. Justin Herbert's 250 yards? Smothered by NY's pass rush (four sacks).

Bet Recap: Chargers Over 23.5 Total Points (1 unit, -161 odds, LOSS -1 unit): LA stalled at 18, thanks to turnovers and a stifled run game.

Buffalo Bills 31, New Orleans Saints 19: Allen's Versatility Keeps Bills Undefeated

Highmark hosted another Allen clinic: 280 pass yards, two TDs, 45 rushes for one score. The Saints' Derek Carr hit 220 but fumbled twice in a 31-19 defeat.

Bet Recap: Bills Over 30.5 Total Points (1 unit, -161 odds, WIN +0.62 units): Buffalo's 31 ticked the box barely, maintaining their 4-0 perch.

Green Bay Packers 40, Dallas Cowboys 40 (Tie): Highest-Scoring Deadlock Ever?

AT&T Stadium's "Sunday Night" ended in OT absurdity: 40-40, the most points in a tie since records began. Prescott threw three TDs and also ran one in; Jordan Love matched with three passing TDs of his own. Micah Parsons' return? A late sack in OT that stopped the Cowboys from putting up another rushing TD likely the win.

Bet Recap: Dak Prescott Over 1.5 Passing TDs w/ Jordan Love 1+ TD, J. Jacobs 10+ Rushes, Both Teams Over 0.5 FGs (3 units, +260 odds, WIN +7.8 units): A monster parlay! Prescott (4 TDs), Love (3), Jacobs (14 carries), and FGs galore (each team three). The tie? Irrelevant—pure payday. One of the most outrageous WIN SLIPS we’ve had, as we had all the outcomes covered except the Field Goals. With 1.45 left and down 34-30, we needed a miracle and not one we needed 2! A double miracle is what we got. Prescott stormed down the field and connected with Pickens in the endzone for a 28 yard touchdown and the lead 37-34. We still needed the field goals which came after Green Bay’s McManus kicked at 53 yarder which was followed up after the Cowboys stalled on their first drive in OT to kick that 2nd miracle outcome we needed! Those are the multi bets you just never forget!!

Week 4: +7.98 units on 7 units risked. The parlay heroics in OT unbelievable but it hit!

Betting Summary: Wins, Losses, and the Math Behind the Madness

Across 15 bets (10 wins, 5 losses), we staked 20 units for 30.13 returned—a 10.13-unit profit. Win rate: 66.7%. ROI: 50.65%. Not shabby for a season still young.

Analysis: What Worked, What Flopped, and Week 5 Outlook

What was our secret sauce? Patience and a disciplined approach focusing on team totals.

It’s been a good start to the NFL Season for the team, the ROI is at 50.65%, shows value in having fewer bets until the form is clearer.  We’ve hit 10.13 units in profit on 20 units out, 10 wins, 5 losses from 15 bets. Starting to get our feelers for the teams now. Parlays and Multi bets with Player Props, especially reduced odds or alternate outcomes, really drains the value out of the bet, almost forcing you to include more outcomes, which usually means more risk.

The 2025 NFL season? It's wide open, with the Eagles (4-0) leading the pack and surprises like the Ravens (1-3) off to an awful start and while the road may lead to Buffalo in an AFC Championship this year, we’re not sold on the Bills yet who have played 3 very weak teams and didn't really put the cleaners through them. They do have a favorable schedule over the next 4 weeks including a bye, but while we expect to see them at 7-0 going into the clash with the Chiefs, the Falcons game in Atlanta in 2 weeks time will be a good litmus test. Falcons 7th in Rushing Yards, if the Bills don't have their defense against the run sorted by then, it could be that match they drop.

RANKING THE BOTTOM SIDES

It’s clear that the Bengals have no offense, penalties from the line of scrimmage killing any chance they have for Chase to shine and their defense isn’t much better giving up 29.8 points a game (27th in the League). This makes them one of the worst sides in the NFL, where they rank 30th in Passing Yards Allowed and 28th in Rushing Yards Allowed, that’s not a good mix. This weekend could be a bloodbath for them against the Lions who Rank 1st in Total Points 34.3 per game.

The bottom 5 teams in points allowed are > Jets, Titans, Saints, Cowboys and would you believe it, the Ravens (33.3 Points Allowed per game!).

Bottom 5 teams giving up yards Rushing > Titans, Giants, Dolphins, Bills (that’s a real problem) and Bears (Allowing 164.5 yards a game but on a BYE this week).

Bottom 5 teams giving up yards Passing > Cardinals, Steelers, Bengals, Ravens (again in the bottom 5, at 31st for 265.5 Yards Passing Allowed), and Cowboys rank last giving up almost 300 yards a game, and who last week didn't force a single punt for Green Bay, 297.3 Yards Passing Allowed!

Keep your eye on the following matches and team total markets >

Titans v Cardinals - FORM GUIDE - Titans 32nd (Last) in Scoring and 28th in Scoring against
