History of the Game

College Football had much in common with the traditional “mob football” played in Great Britain. The games remained largely un-organized until the 19th century, when intramural games of football began to be played on college campuses. Each school played it’s own variety or style of football though all share certain commonalities. The mob style games were played hard, with injury and violence being a common occurrence which lead to widespread protests thus leading to changes with the rules or rather rules committee’s being formed to police the game and stop the violence and injuries.

Walter Camp is widely considered to be the most important figure in the development of American football, with the suggestion of a reduction of players from 15 to 11, this being passed in 1880. The effect was to open up the game and emphasize speed over strength. Camp’s most famous change, the establishment of the line of scrimmage and the snap from center to quarterback, was also passed in 1880., with other rules being implemented paved the way to the great game we know today.

College football expanded greatly during the last two decades of the 19th century. Several major rivalries date from this time period.

November 1890 was an active time in the sport. In Baldwin City, Kansas, on November 22, 1890, college football was first played in the state of Kansas. Baker beat Kansas 22–9.] On the 27th, Vanderbilt played Nashville (Peabody) at Athletic Park and won 40–0. It was the first time organized football played in the state of Tennessee. The 29th also saw the first instance of the Army–Navy Game. Navy won 24–0.

As professional football became a national television phenomenon, college football did as well.In 1952, the NCAA claimed all television broadcasting rights for the games of its member institutions, and it alone negotiated television rights. Today schools are now free to negotiate their own television deals. The sport has become just as popular as any other sport in the USA.
